How to Care for Scented Pillar Candles
A beautifully scented pillar candle is one of the simplest ways to transform a room — but get the care wrong and you'll end up with tunnelling, poor scent throw, and a candle that burns out far too soon. Follow these tips and you'll get every hour of fragrance your candle has to offer.
The First Burn Is Everything
The most important burn is the very first one. Wax has a 'burn memory' — it will only melt as wide as it did on its first burn. Always allow your pillar candle to burn long enough for the melt pool to reach the full diameter of the candle before extinguishing it. For a 7 cm diameter pillar candle, this typically takes 2–3 hours. Resist the urge to blow it out early.
Trim the Wick Every Time
Before every single burn, trim your wick to 5–6 mm. A long wick causes the flame to flicker, smoke, and burn too hot — which wastes wax and weakens the scent throw. Pinch off the burnt tip with your fingers once the candle is cold, or use a wick trimmer for a clean cut.
Burn in Sessions, Not Marathons
Never burn a pillar candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Extended burns cause the wick to 'mushroom' (carbon builds up on the tip), the wax gets too hot, and you risk the jar or holder overheating. Give your candle a rest of at least 2 hours between burns to allow the wax to cool and reset.
Keep It Away from Draughts
Wind and draughts are the enemies of an even burn. Position your candle away from open windows, fans, air conditioning vents, and busy walkways. An unsteady flame burns unevenly, creates soot, and eats through one side of the wax faster than the other.
Hug the Wax In
Unlike container candles, pillar candles are designed to 'self-contain' — the outer wall acts as its own vessel. As the wax softens near the end of a burn session, you can gently push the soft outer walls inward with your hands (after extinguishing, of course) to feed more wax into the melt pool. This keeps the candle burning cleanly and prevents waste.
Store Correctly Between Burns
When you're not burning your candle, keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources. UV light fades colour and weakens fragrance over time. Store in a cool, dry place — a cupboard or drawer works perfectly.
Know When to Stop
Stop burning your pillar candle when 1–2 cm of wax remains at the base. Burning all the way down can damage the surface your candle is sitting on and poses a fire risk.
